Why Sofia?

WHY SOFIA?

There are two priorites in Sofia Muziekschool that deserve a little attention:1-kinesthetics;2- intuition.DEFINITION OF KINESTHETICS:-THE FEELING OF MOVEMENT BEFORE THE ACTION BEGINS.AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE :-DREAMING OF WALKING DURING SLEEP------WITHOUT MOVING LIMBS.WESTERN MUSIC MAKING TENDS TOWARDS THE CEREBAL.FUNCIONAL DE-CORTIFICATION IS THE DEEPEST LEVEL AT WHICH MUSIC CAN BE TAUGHT.NOTE:-THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HYPNOTISM,WHICH USES MANIPULATION OF THE SUB-CONSCIOUS STATES.FUNCTIONAL DE-CORTIFICATION MUST BE TAUGHT IN SUCH A WAY AS TO BE 'AUTO GENERATIVE',THE STUDENT TRULY IN FULL COMMAND OF THE PROCESS.

KINESTHETICS;INTUITION

They are both included in anticipatory preparotory movements,the former physically;the latter perceptually."Follow through" is a completed link between intention and execution of movement,a good description of one of the intents of kinesthetics.But anticipation plays an integral part of all musical learning abilities,talent being one aspect of a greater process.How do we perceive sound?As an empathising between act and resonance?Is all resonance of an instrument outside the protagonists' body?The truth of these questions is like probing quicksand ,because an Cartesian truncation of body as purely material,and mind as ontologically non material,simply is an arbitrary evacuation of one from the other.

After some cogitation,music is surely more the the sum total of its elements.In this over materialised,over capitalised,over radicalised western 'developed' world perhaps we have lost the will to 'be' more than we can logically formulate into words .Freneticism is almost a marketable quality,so....

Why not dream a little?Why not take a step back from the accepted limitations of an individual;why not become more than words can confess.Poetic license aside,the need for a welcoming of our children into a musical experience as a person,ie an integrated,communicating individual-and no longer as a persona is the de-charicaturing,disciplined aim of the professional musicians who began SOFIA Muziekschool.

The choice is between 'music as relationship' and 'music as technique'.
