Just a moment- should that be taken as axiomatic- ie always true?
Did you know that the notes that any of the western bands with 'hits' use are ,technically "non existent",due to Bach's 'tempering',and therefore the emotions associated with them are flawed ,in that we are being trained in "musical lies".But, now...how does that make the emotions flawed? musical lies? If it sounds 'off' why is that better?-The job of the musician is to reconcile the apparent with the actual. That is not achieved if the performance lacks technical integrity and if associativeness is reduced to a dependency on a flawed system.
Surely music is not a technical, scientifically engineered phenemon .. however the first seven overtones form the basis of western harmony, and tempering ,as such , has lost the colors of many traditions. Okay, why does one consider these notes, tuned to the flawed piano, 'musical lies' and the emotions then inflenced by such music (almost all these days) flawed?take folk music of any kind- why do you think the irish rarely perform it with a piano?Tempering came in with the reformation and in ireland it was resisted as a form of anglicisation So you are saying that tempering was a result of religious movements?- why do you think that the purest form of scottish folk music can be heard not in scotland ,but the prince edward islands. Has scotland capitulated to Church of England?-er not quite;I am positing the homogenisation due to tempering of lyrical folk music as one of the reasons for the disappearance of 'old sounds'.The loss of ethnic identity counts as one of the the political basis for much revolution.
For example Former yugoslavia has several ethnic groups ,all of whom are saturated with roma (gypsy) music styleso much so that the roma people invite muslims, croats ,serbs ,to perform their weddings-butnow they fight like hell against each other -accident? Not singly attributable as such ,of course, but it should be noted that the main cultural collision occurs over division of land-an issue of ownwership foreign in several ways to the roma ideal:-ownership of land as a controlling force that has rarely,if ever, produced great music. That is not to say the absence of a homeland is a necessary prerequisite for the greatness of Dvorak's or Smetena's music, but it should be noted how much of the western tradition has been devoted to the 'wandering romantic' -,Faust- Don Juan -The Flying Dutchman etc.The ahasveric man is never far from our musical back door.It is the embodiment of the gypsy ideal in music that betrays all the values of the Roma tradition, when 'canonised' in the western musical culture.
